Sweetest Strawberry Cake in the South!
DESCRIPTION: Before my family moved to WV, the Backstage Cafe was a bi-weekly stop for me and my girlfriends and daughters. We'd usually begin with a nice homemade soup and a reuben and then top off our meal with a slice of Linda's HEAVENLY strawberry cake. Of all the tasty homemade treats, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite. In fact I was known to buy whole cakes for any occasion...including just sitting around with my family for the weekend. It is the best and I've tried several times to duplicate the recipe since I've moved away. Since I've had NO success, I'll have to rely on my fond memories of the Backstage Cafe for now!

Great Restaurant and Bakery
DESCRIPTION: Fewer restaurants are offering soups these days, and those that do typically offer the standard french onion, vegetable beef or chicken noodle soup. When you're looking for an inspiring soup to warm you up on a chilly day, look no further than Panera Bread. Each day, this cafe offers at least five freshly made soups. These can be ordered in a bread bowl or as part of a combo with a half sandwich or salad. The salads and sandwiches here are also unique. Sandwiches include Italian-influenced paninis as well as a variety of sandwiches on your choice of many types of fresh-baked breads. Most of the salads here are served with romaine lettuce or baby greens and rather interesting dressings and toppings. These are comparable to salads one would find in upscale restaurants. The coffee and bakery area is great for a quick java and bagel on the way to work, but it's hard to pass up the many delicious pastries. One reason I enjoy Panera Bread is the warm, comfortable atmosphere. One can eat in the bakery or the cafe. Tables and booths are available, and jazz music is piped in. During the busy hours, it can get a little loud when order numbers are called out over the intercom. Otherwise, you'll frequently find professionals tapping away on their laptops, holding business meetings or relaxing with a newspaper and a steaming espresso.

DESCRIPTION: This is a wonderful place to bring the family to eat or on a romantic getaway for two. The staff is very helpful and polite.

Nothing Special Beyond Ambiance
DESCRIPTION: I had a large breakfast here once. There was nothing memorable about it, except the price: too expensive. At least the building looks nice on the outside. Very angular.

Stick to the Cakes, Not the Menu
DESCRIPTION: Nothing special here about the daily breakfast and lunch menus -- especially for the price. The bakery items, however, are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Pastries, cookies and cake are all winners. Still a bit pricey though.

Fantastic Cookies
DESCRIPTION: My family and I came to Durham with an extended stay at Duke University Hospital. During our stay, we had the oportunity to visit the Mad Hatter several times (we also went back after we left Durham and returned home to Florida). The cookies I purchased werethe black and white or ying & yang as some call them. As some having cravings while pregnant or because of a smell, when I see black and white I think of these melt in your mouth, huge cookies and wish I could walk to the bakery and get one. Or at least go to a web page and order some (hint).

DESCRIPTION: It is one of my duties here in my office to order lunch for the office once a week. With 15 people buzzing around it's hard to please everyone. However, I recently ordered some boxed lunches and *everyone* raved about how delicious everything was and how they enjoyed it so much. The delivery service was efficient and convinient and I appreciated everything! I look forward to ordering from Mad Hatter's again!

Great Food
DESCRIPTION: The bakery items were great and the grilled salmon is awesome. It would be $15 dollars at most restaurants. It's also the only place I know were you can get Kobe beef burgers. The cakes are incredible as well as the atmosphere. Definitely recommended.
