DESCRIPTION: Although the service is pretty slow especially during lunch hours, porto's bakery delivers a wide array of pastries, bread, cakes and sandwiches. The cuban sandwich is impeccable. Try it, you might like it!
DESCRIPTION: Samba room was nice. It was a pleasant change instead of going to downtown Chicago, so that was an experience in itself. The place was nice, the food was good. I recommend the "Churrasco". It's NY steak with rice and beans, but it's much better than I'm describing it. Also the platanos are good, although we thought they would be a good side dish and actually they make a good dessert. They have brown sugarr and cinnamon, so, you may want to hold off until after the main course. The only complaint is the music. Ok, I know the theme of the restauran is Cuban, and I know Gloria Estefan is Cuban, but that doesn't mean you have to play her CD ALL night LONG! There are many other great Cuban artist that they could have played, and they didn't even have to be Cuban to give it a Latin flavor. Overall, good! I put down minor flaws for ambience cause believe it or not, the chairs we were sitting in were probably the most uncomfortable I've sat in ever!

DESCRIPTION: I have taken the time to read all of the above reviews and I have to ask, "do they really think they are food critics?" Where do they come off criticizing the most trivial facets of the dining experience. The Samba Room is fantastic...food, drinks, ambiance, service, etc. This is a nice restaurant designed with Cuban flair and should be absorbed accordingly.

wonderful blend of flavors
DESCRIPTION: This has become one of our favorite restaurants. The red snapper is absolutely delicious and the presentation in great. It's a fun atmosphere with out being over the top. In warmer weather it's a great place to sit outside and enjoy yourself. Also the iced coffee is really good.

Nice blend of different influences
DESCRIPTION: By looking at the menu, I thought the restaraunt's influences were Carribean/South American, not strictly Cuban. My Worst Dining Experience
DESCRIPTION: I really feel bad for my friends, because I recommended we dine here, and it was a disaster! The Sangria is awful! I sent it back and replaced it with a pitcher of Mojitos. They taste good, but I drank half the pitcher and only caught a sugar buzz. $28 for lemonade is ridiculous! We drank and ate appetizers, then we ordered at 8pm and they were already out of the dish recommended by the waitor. The waitor did not know the menu at all and made up answers to my questions--which I discovered were wrong AFTER the food came. I told him that I wanted protein and vegetables, so he suggested their 'award winning' dish featured in some recent magazine: scallops and stir fry vegetables. It took them over an hour from the time we ordered our meal to bring it to us. When I got my meal, there were 5 scallops and a tiny pile of pasta with a few onion slivers in it. Even if I wanted pasta, I would have gone hungry. It looked like an appetizer. Thank goodness I got some fuel from all the sugar water I drank before the meal! The Coconut creme brulee had no coconut in it, nor did it taste like it did. On top of all of this, the waitor asked consistently if everything was OK and we consisitently gave him kind feedback, but he could have cared less and did nothing about it, except not charge us for the pitcher of so called Sangria--which I had requested anyway. I like the atmosphere, but he music is repetative and too loud--it is difficult to have a conversation. The food was presented very well and tasted decent (not authentic, but they don't claim that it is), but the dining experience as a whole was horrendous. To sum it up: there was no rum in the Mojito, no vegetables in the stir fry, no coconut in the coconut creme brulee and no service in the restaurant. I know you are probably thinking that I am one of those who complain about everything, but, let me tell you, when I was in the ladies room after the meal, I heard another woman say, "That was the worst meal I have ever had. I'm not coming back here." I knew it was not me! You have been warned! Please bring back the Copa Cubana to Naperville--it was wonderful!

Bring back the paella
DESCRIPTION: Used to be good, now they've standardized the rice and offer it with three different meat paellas - quicker cooking, much less interesting than the old "dirty rice" of Cuban cooking, which they used to only offer on the weekend because it took longer to make. Now they don't even offer it for New Year's or any other holiday. Quality has gone downhill, although we still occasionally enjoy going there.

What's Not To Like?
DESCRIPTION: The weather changes....the days change.. and so do a persons food choices...and choices is what you get at Stevs' Market and Deli. I can eat there on a cool, rainy day and have the best soup-of-the-day..three days later I eat there when it's 95 degrees and have the best grilled chicken caesar salad around. DESCRIPTION: I first visited "Flor" down by the Holland Tunnel back in February, 2003 and was thoroughly impressed. We had gone for an impromptu dinner with very good friends of mine, Mickey and Pete. Every last details was handled promptly and the food was reminiscent of the days when I would visit my best friend from the third grade. Her mom would make fried bananas, chorizos and some egg and potato thing that would make me drool. but back to Flor....Four of us had gone for dinner on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, and we ordered over 14 appetizers. Mushrooms, shrimp, chorizos, bananas, avocado salad, that potato and egg thing.....all to die for, add a couple a pitchers of white and red sangria and we had a party. the lobster special, filet mignon were equally as delicious and the desserts were soooooooo real, that my boyfriend, after trying the cake, actually purchased and entire cake to take home. By far, the best dining experience I had in years. There was a band there (Wednesday, July 30, 2003) that was phenominal...... Pete later explained that friends of his owned the place, two sisters that he had met years ago and that they also owned Son Cuban. Flor was so impressive, that we made a trip to Son Cubano just to see the owners. Well, the feel of Son Cuban was captivating, the music selection, incredible and the mojitos were right on the money. You cannot miss this.

What a Nightmare.
DESCRIPTION: I first stopped into Son Cubano this past summer for a drink. Its seemed like a lovely place. My boyfriend and I have wanted to return for dinner and this past weekend we decided to go to Son Cubano. We were early for our reservation, so we went to the bar for a drink and conversation. So, we are standing there drinking and have a good time and then a bouncer dressed in a suit comes up to us and tells us we are standing in the service area and could we move to the side. Fine, no problem. We moved up against the wall and contnued to drink and have a good time. Then another bouncer in a suit came over and asked if my jacket was hangning on one of the stands and I saw that it was and removed my jacket. I continued to try to enjoy myself with my drink and then a third bouncer in a suit comes up to us and tells us we are blocking the bathroom line. At that point wer were like...what the F. Where do you want us to stand. The place was packed. The guys starts arguing with us and we were like...where would you like us to stand. It just got so stupid that we went up to the hostess and cancelled the reservaton. She asked why and I told her and said we would go to Cipriani's. We ended up at Ciprianis and had a great peaceful well attented to dinner. I will never go to Son Cubano...EVER! Its more of a nightclub than a restaurant. If I had known that, I would have never gone. OH, and don't forget the fact that we came all the way from Connecticut to eat at Son Cubano...just to be aggravated.

Lousy Hostess
DESCRIPTION: We arrived at 7:30PM for our 8:30PM reservation for 2. The restaurant was almost empty at this time. We politely informed the young hostess that we would like to enjoy a few drinks at the bar before being seated and if possible to have a table within view of the band. Hiding behind a phony smile she seemed rather annoyed at this simple request and muttered something like "I'll see what I can do..." Sure enough we were seated at the farthest table in a back corner and couldn't even see the band. We kindly asked again for something a little closer and were rudely told, behind the same phony smile, that we'd have to wait another hour or sit outside. We will never return to this place. The food was below average. The Spinach Salad with Skirt Steak appetizer was ok but the Ropa Vieja was horrible, very dry and tasteless and the Pork Loin was no better. Tres Leches dessert was just ok as well. The best part of the night was our waiter. Very accommodating and at no time we felt rushed. Maybe it was because we had the worst table in the place, lol.

Not the shadow of what it used to be!!
DESCRIPTION: My girlfriend and I hadn't been to this restaurant for almost 9 months. We always regarded it as the only and best gourmet Cuban restaurant in NY. Last night, 5 of us (all Cuban) went there for a Valentines dinner. I must say it was one of the biggest disappointments I've had in a while. The quality AND quantity of the food went from a 5 to a 1. The presentation, which was one of the things I used to love at this place, declined from a 5 to a 0. They didn't even try. It used to be presented in an artistic style with sculptural forms etc. It used to be large artistic plates. Now they are using cafeteria-style cheap beige plates. Two of us ordered the Bistec Empanizado. The steaks were small, and whoever cooked them didn't know how to make Cuban-style breaded steak! I ordered the Oxtail and struggled for an hour to try to dislodge the meat from the bones. My other friend ordered the Churrasco (skirt steak) and I've had baby churrasco's bigger than this one which was meant to be normal size. It was a joke. Again, no presentation either there. The side dish of Moros rice wasn't loose enough and the portion size was for a midget. Overall, we spent about $260 and we could've gotten a more authentic, delicious meal at other "not-so-fancy" Cuban restaurants. Glad it was a last for ALL of us. I will not recommend this place to anyone who is familiar with classic Cuban food.

DESCRIPTION: The Crazy Cuban rocks! It is the type of restaurant where you can go and have a great time accompanied with a great dinner and still feel at home. I had a roasted pork plate and it sooo moist and tender...you could lick your fingers. I hope to be going back soon.
