DESCRIPTION: The Heidleburger is an incredible burger joint for locals. Don't let the parking lot fool you, sit inside or out, or perfect to go. Fish and chips, onion rings, fried mushroom caps, INCREDIBLE shakes...but the best is the Heli-burger. Locals order the double heli,which is incredibly filling, but if you dare, order the triple heli-only the locals know about it! Say hi to Dennis the owner!

DESCRIPTION: We have eaten here for several years and always had outstanding food and service. You must try one of the draft beers, and any of the German entries. They are more then happy to satisfy your personal wishes. If the weather is nice try the beer garden. Save room for dessert.

Best German Restaurant in Maryland
DESCRIPTION: I have to comment on the gentleman above who thinks that the beer is pricy and that one should save their money for the real thing in Deutschland. Phooey. The Schmankerl Stube is an excellent German Restaurant. My wife is German and I lived almost eight years in Germany. I have been throughout the country and my favorite German food is by far the Bavarian basic country style of cooking. In many ways, it reminds me of the cooking found in the "Deep South" of our own country. Unchanged for centuries, these basic German dishes have pleased kings and queens for the past millemnium. Charlie, who owns the Schmankerl Stube, does an excellent job of creating a true, yet simple, German atmosphere reflective of his home country. This is very much what one would find in restaurant in a small town in Germany, should one wander in for a meal and a brew. Charlie's original beers are the real thing, and are imported in kegs from Germany. This is not the Americanized version of a foreign beer. A Typical German beer carries an alcohol content of 4-6% and some are higher. Charlie carries real German beer. My suggestion is that you call ahead for reservations and reserve the Schwein-Haxen. My German wife swears that Charlie has the best Schwein-Haxen she has ever eaten. I would say they are equal to the best I have ever eaten. As for the price of Charlie's beer, they are less costly than what you would pay at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. I pasted the Munich Hofbruahaus beer menu, which I found on the web, below for your Reference. Hofbr u Original (light beer) 1,0 l 6,20 Hofbr u Dunkel (dark beer) 1,0 l 6,20 M nchner Kindl Weissbier (wheat beer) 0,5 l 3,30 Radler (light beer and lemon soda mix) 1,0 l 6,20 Dunkles Radler (dark beer and lemon soda mix) 1,0 l 6,20 Ru n (wheat beer and lemon soda mix) 1,0 l 6,60 Right now (February 14, 2006), one Euro is about $1.19. As you can see above, one "Hoffbrau Original" at the Munich Hofbrauhaus costs about $7.38 US today. Knock $1.00 off the price for the Hofbrauhaus being a tourist trap and you have about the same price at the Schmankerl Stube as the common folk pay in Germany. Charlie is not ripping anyone off. Don't Pass up this GREAT place
DESCRIPTION: If you want the best food in Old Town, this is where you need to eat. The chef, Klaus, has the standard favorites (made better than you've ever had) as well as some truly inspired specialties. An impressive wine list, great german beers and a wonderful desert menu are the icing on the cake. The exquisite experience of dining at Bistro Europa is unmatched.

Mediocre food, expensive for what you get
DESCRIPTION: I don't agree with the superlatives in other reviews. I wonder if those reviewers have eaten at many German restaurants or been to Germany. My sister took me here for a birthday celebration. I selected Bistro Europa because I had never been there and wanted to try a new place. Big mistake. I live near Old Town Alexandria, and it offers many better restuarants. We were there on a Thursday night, and the place was almost empty, a bad sign in Old Town any night of the week. There is a bar under the same management upstairs and a sports match must have been on TV, because we could hear the noise. Periodically, the rowdy viewers would shout and cheer and stomp on their floor, which was our ceiling. That ruined the ambiance of the nicely decorated restuarant for me. I had pork loin with apples. It was over cooked and would have been dry except that it was drowned in a sticky, intensely sweet sauce that tasted a little like maple syrup. The little bit of mixed vegetables was also over cooked as was the tasteless green spaetzle and they were also drowned in the sauce. Perhaps I picked the wrong dish because my sister liked her duck with cranberry sauce. Wines by the glass were expensive--$7-8 per glass, but good. A half bottle was available for one red wine for $20. More half bottles and carafes of cheaper wine would have been an improvement. The chocolate decadence cake was gone, so we switched to Black Forest cake. It was sweet and tasteless. As for moderate cost, the bill came to more than $70 for two entrees, two glasses of wine, and one piece of cake that we split. Save your money and go to Geranio, Le Refuge, Bistro Lafayette, La Bergerie, or Le Gaulois if you are in Old Town Alexandria and want excellent European food.

Excellent Food, Lovely Atmosphere
DESCRIPTION: Sitting along side a bubbling creek filled with large fish and birds just waiting for you to toss them a piece of your bratwurst. In the summer the patio by the creek is a must for anyone passing through Bellefonte, PA. They have a wonderful Octoberfest celebration with live traditional German bands ready to play your favorite German Oom-Pa-Pa.

DESCRIPTION: If the food was the only thing you noticed about Schnitzel's, then you would be missing a major part of the dining experience. The atmosphere at Schnitzel's is like actually being in a German restaurant in Bavaria. The food is wonderful. The service is outstanding. The food is to die for.

Highly Recommend the Kleiner Deutschmann
DESCRIPTION: This restaurant offers an absolutely delightful dining experience! The German cuisine is one of the most authentic and pleasing I have had the privilege of enjoying. The experience starts when the front door opens and one is enveloped in the mouthwatering aroma of the German fare. This is truly authentic German food. The ambiance is more than I expected. From the collection of plates and Hummel figurines, to the German beer steins, it all feels intimate and warm. The selection of German beer is fabulous, as well as the German wines. It even encompasses the waiters, right down to their knickers and suspenders. I would highly recommend the Kleiner Deutschmann, but be warned; make reservations!

A Boulder County Tradition
DESCRIPTION: Upon entering the premises of this Boulder county tradition, you are greeted by the ebullient German host, Andrea Liermann. Andrea s personal touch is what has made this restaurant special since 1977. The establishment is fashioned in the style of old Bavarian hunting lodges lots of wood and animal trophies adorn the walls. The burning fire in the corner and cozy warm atmosphere floods over you as you prepare yourself to order. Andrea s kitchen is known for its fresh and natural cooking. Everything is made from scratch. Most of the German dishes, brought directly over from the family estate, use recipes that have been followed for many generation. Along with the old world classics, Andrea s serves an appetizing variety of dishes. Her chefs have a wide range of lighter and healthier menu items that support and compliment the more traditional dishes. Great Place to eat!!
DESCRIPTION: We stumbled on Martin's by accident, and now make it a mandatory stop when we are in the area. You can't go wrong with any dish, but the German dishes are especially good. The regional German dishes are even better!! Martin will normally come out and say hello and he is such a nice guy. If you are really lucky, you'll get Nisvet as your server. He's a very good guy, too.

German Food?
DESCRIPTION: Went there last weekend and was very disappointed. The special was sauerbrauten. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it. Unfortunately it was NOT sauerbraten. It was thin roast beef with a poor excuse for a sour sauce. Pretty pricey for a faux German meal!

DESCRIPTION: This restaurant is great for something different! I normally don't care for German food, but I eat here whenever a friend suggests that we visit. Before I became a vegetarian, I would eat their meat, very flavorful and juicy. The mashed potatoes and other side dishes are delicious! It's sort of an "out of the way" restaurant... I don't think many people visit it. The neighborhood isn't very nice, but the food IS very good.
