Excellent Restaurant
DESCRIPTION: I recently returned from a two week business trip in Europe and upon returning wanted to dine at the European Bistro for comparison purposes. The food was incredible, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was just like I had never left Germany! I have nothing but good things to say about the restaurant and highly recommend you try it.

Best Restaurant in Northwest Indiana
DESCRIPTION: You'd never suspect it from the outside, but inside this small, but intimate establishment is some of the best food I have ever been served. From the Angel Hair Marinara to the blackened steak, we have never had a bad meal here. Not only is the food wonderful, but the wait staff is efficient but not hovering. This is my family's first choice for special occasions.

The people who eat here don't get out much.
DESCRIPTION: The first problem with Anthony s is that they don't know what they want to be. Is it Italian, as the name might indicate, or French, or American? I prefer to think of it as crumby-food fusion. While the sight of degustation offerings on the menu might get your hopes up as to the culinary standards of this restaurant, you ll soon find that the dishes at Anthony s taste like all of their ingredients were thrown together at the last minute and show no regard for the impact flavors have upon one another. Sauces, meats and pastas don t compliment each other, instead; they taste like a series of individual flavors thrown together. In addition, pastas are routinely cooked far beyond al dente and the overall freshness and quality of the ingredients isn t the best . I have been to Anthony s twice and have found each time that my food and that of my guests has been uninspired and less than cohesive. Anthony s offers soup or salad with your entr e, but this isn t enough to make up for the indigestion you ll experience from pricing that s out of line with the overall quality of the dining experience. The bottom line is an much better Italian meals can be had for the same price at restaurants in Merrillville, Lansing and Chicago.

Great food, mad beer and wine selection!
DESCRIPTION: I Stopped in with a group of 5 and never knew Anthonys Cafe existed. It was highly recommended by a friend. I was blown away by the beer selection- 68 varieties, and my wife loved the wine selections, 50+ varieties and most available by the taste and glass. The service was outstanding and the cafe ambiance was the best I had ever seen but the real reason we were there was for the food, I had heard alot but I was sceptical and wanted to judge for myself. The fresh baked Italian peasant bread served with a balsamic and fresh tomato vinagrette fired up my taste buds, Appetizers of Sauteed mushrooms and bruschetta were out of this world, crisp house salads were great and we all ordered a different entrees, I chose the Southern Creole, It had Shrimp, Chicken, Crab and sausage with risotto, wow, It was the bomb! We all split 4 desserts, Bananas foster, Tiramisu, Double chocolate mousse and a very rich and smooth chocolate cake. The coffee was outstanding and I asked the waitress what type of coffee they use and I found out that they make their own Anthonys Cafe blended coffee and they sell it in bags to go, My wife and I purchsed a bag and I think it was only 5 dollars, It was some of the best coffee I had ever had. I still could'nt believe this beautiful cafe was in Highland for 7 years. My wife and I met the Chef and owner on the way out, His name was Tony and he thanked us for our business and we thanked him for the wonderful evening. Hortobagy Restaurant
DESCRIPTION: Excellent Hungarian / European cuisine at moderate prices. We had always gone as a group, anywhere from 8-14 people, approximately 5 times. Service sometimes can be annoying and/or slow. Several examples: 1) Asking for something such as water and having to wait, then reminding them that the water hasn't arrived yet 10 minutes later, and being told that they are busy. 2) Waiters always seem to ask for cash on tips, rather than allowing you to just put it on a Visa. For large parties, this can be highly inconvenient, and as a result, will just tip with cash readily available, not necessarily what should be the 'proper' amount, plus it tends to tick people off. 3) Finally, have to keep calling up for a menu to be faxed over - kept getting one excuse after another, then told the fax was broken (on the 4th call). Another time, was told to call back because the person that answered the phone didn't speak English. If there were other Hungarian restaurants reasonably close by, we would probably opt to try them out, rather than keep going to Hortobagy, even if the food is good.

One of my favorite restaurants in the SFV
DESCRIPTION: I had nothing but good dining experiences at Hortobagy's the two evenings I dined there recently. The food was excellent and the service outstanding, particularly considering that there was only one waitress working the entire room the first time I was there. I enjoyed the stuffed cabbage on my first visit and the Morello cherry soup followed by Chicken Paprikas on my second. Each dish was perfectly prepared and utterly scrumptious. The Paprikas came with a heaping bowl of homemade spaetzel that I could only eat about one third of -- not because it weren't excellent, but simply because there was so much of it! I had Hungarian red wine (Egri) both nights and enjoyed a glass of Tokaj with my coffee on my second visit. There were no reservations about accepting my credit card either time, and the waitress who had served me the first time I was there was sweet enough to stop by my table as she was going off shift on my second visit just to say she hoped I had enjoyed my meal and would come back very soon. I consider the food served here to be roughly as good as the food at Rivoli or Oliveto's, two Bay Area restaurants I frequent. The service was exceptional and I found the quiet friendly atmosphere very pleasant.

Best Hungarian in the City
DESCRIPTION: Great food, ambience, music. I love chicken paprikas and gundel palacsinta, just like it is made in Hungary. And there is a violin player, very nice music.

What a find!
DESCRIPTION: This is so worth visiting. Peter Vamos is a concert pianist and composer and has owned restaurants in Budapest, Hungary (his native country), New York City and Scottsdale. Serves authentic Hungarian and variety of continental entree's. Cozy private courtyard. Live piano bar Fri and Sat till 1:30 am. Sunday live flamenco 6 pm-8 pm. Peter plays on request. Talent abounds in this hidden corner of old Scottsdale.

Honest Home-Style Hungarian
DESCRIPTION: Anna's is simple restaurant. And I mean that in the best possible way. You won't find fancy tablecloths or pretentious service here. What you will find is good, old-fashioned home cooking -- that is, if your home happens to be Hungarian. Anna's is a true mom-and-pop establishment, with mom in the open kitchen and pop serving as waiter for the five or six small tables. Both of them chat freely with the customers and each other in English and Hungarian. A few bits of Hungary brighten the otherwise plain luncheonette-style atmosphere, and the friendly service makes you feel like you're in someone's house, not a restaurant. There are few places where the chef will come out to ask you how everything is (more than once), or to explain the dishes. The food was all excellent, from a long-simmered beef stew in a rich, heady, wine-based sauce, to a jazzed-up Hungarian version of Central Europe's ubiquitous cabbage rolls. A mushroom soup had an excellent depth of flavor. Fans of spicy food should be sure to ask for the shaker of Hungarian hot paprika for a little extra zing. The food can be rich (Hungarians love sour cream, and it finds its way into -- or onto -- nearly everything), and the portions are generous, especially considering the very reasonable prices. Because Anna's is a small place, not all of the soups on the menu are available every day, so if you have a favorite, you might want to call ahead. And on my visit, fairly early on a weekend evening, they had already run out of pork stew. However, there were plenty of other excellent options.

Athantic German? maybe..
DESCRIPTION: We just moved to Seattle, WA from Munich Germany and of course we visited Leavenworth. We went to King Ludwig's for Schnitzel and it wasn't too bad... but not too authentic, either: The red cabbage had way to much cinnamon in it and the breading of the Schnitzel wasn't quite right and even offering rice pilaf with a Schnitzel is an insult (so we picked the red potatoes, but usually it comes with frys!). But still: The taste was good and the veal was tender.

A Fun Experience
DESCRIPTION: I went to King Ludwig's with a group of 20 friends and had a great experience. We ordered a platter with a number of meats and sides on it, along with thier famous "Schweinshax n" which our friendly server (dressed in Bavarian clothing) carved for us. The food was hot, and the "Schweinshax n" was crispy on the outside with great seasoning. With a good dinner in us and some great German beer, we made out way out onto the dance floor for the Chicken Dance and more to accordian music. While the food may be "Americanized" a bit for american tastes, it tastes great and the we all had a great time!

A Favorite!
DESCRIPTION: Many restaurants advertise their authenticity and "homemade" food, but how many of them actually have food that really TASTES as if it came from a traditional home kitchen? The Hungarian Village is one of the rare restaurants that can answer that challenge. This reviewer first discovered Hungarian Village in 1990, and it has been a favorite ever since. The owners, Hugo and Anna Maria Tischler, are an old-world Hungarian couple who even do some of the cooking, and the authenticity shines through in all that they offer. Before your meal, you receive two different kinds of homemade bread served with a delicately floavored, traditional, Hungarian liptauer cheese spread. This is followed by a simple green salad or the more traditional cucumber salad. The entrees are all wonderful, but two that should not be missed are the Veal or Chicken Paprikas and the Beef Goulash. These incredible treats are so rich with flavor that you will want to roll them around your palate for a while as you would a fine wine. If you are really hungry and ambitious, try the "Wooden Plate" - a collection of Filet Mignon, Wiener Schnitzel, Roast Pork, Stuffed Cabbage, and Stuffed Mushrooms. For dessert, get the Apple Strudel or the Creams (pronounced "CREH-mish") - a flaky, cream-filled, Napoleon-like pastry. As if all of that were not enough, when you leave, the Hungarian Village, for every two people in your party, you will receive a loaf of that homemade bread (with which your meal started) to take home with you. Try this unique restaurant soon, but plan appropriately, since they are only open for dinner (4:30PM - 9PM), and they are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Makes you feel GOOD!
DESCRIPTION: Cafe Marika is a wonderful place to enjoy some very good eastern European foods. There are four or five small tables and a counter to sit at. The Owners are very friendly and the service is perfect. There are no strange dishes here..Only the best of the regional cuisine. Dress as you like..Or dress up and enjoy an intimate dinner during you one hour European vacation. Dinner prices include Coffee and desert. $10-$13
