Superior service, smooth taste, great date place!
DESCRIPTION: It's nice to be greeted cordially, checked to make sure the meal is going well, and meeting the owner after the meal who asked, "How was everything? Is there anything else I could get for you?" I consider myself a not very requiring customer, but this little extra was quite a treat. The dishes looked familiar to me, having had Indian foods before, but there were some unique items and the flavor had a very smoothe blend of spices like they were cooking for V.I.P's. The decor was also nice, they really did a lot for a shopping stripmall place. I'm sure with enough visitors they'll be building a palace that would rightfully house the great experience found inside. When you go, bring a date, I'm sure s/he will be delighted by the service and the meal.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL !!!
DESCRIPTION: I've made a habit of visiting Star of India once or twice a week for the past 5 years. Never trying indian food before, I hadn't a clue what to expect. In the many indian resturants I've tried since, they're still the best! Lunch buffet or dinner, be assured the food is incredible!

Delicious
DESCRIPTION: Star of India offers delicious, reasonably priced food. We have only eaten there once (twice after tonight-- we live 80 miles away), but believe me, if we lived nearby we'd eat there at least once a month. They even gave us free appetizers last time we were there.

The Chef is home, but is anyone running the place?
DESCRIPTION: This restaurant seems in decay/decline. But perhaps it was always this way. Your first greeted upon entry by plastic plants that have somehow died and the wall remains of what was once clearly a payphone. Press on a little further and you will see a large fairly nice looking bar, that to get to you will have to step around a large broken fountain, replete with extension cord piled on top. Look around the rest of the entry way and there are two couches with blankets and a space heater--does someone live there? Could they at least have "made" their couch and put the blankets away before serving dinner? Really, the place looks untended, unclean or broken, depending upon where you glance. Our waitress asked us about drinks, but she was only teasing. The aforementioned bar does not include a bartender, apparently. The only drink the waitress could make was "maybe vodka and coke?". We declined and ordered some wine, thinking it safer. After bringing out the wrong appetizer, the waitress then proceeded to bring the correct one, but could not conceal her outright annoyance at us for the rest of the meal. We ordered "Tandoori Assorted Appetizers" which were served in a sizzling hot skillet and surprisingly good. For entres, both the Lamb Korma and Chicken Vindaloo were excellent. Water glasses were regularly refilled, but not much else in the way of service. Dinner was only $38. Good food, but I doubt we'd ever visit again. I would recommend the owners spend a few hours and dollars to clear the clutter and broken things, replace some light bulbs and clean the floors. A bizzare experience.

Don't waste your time!
DESCRIPTION: Was told it would only be 1/2 hr when I called in takeout order, but when I got there they made me wait another 40 mins! They wouldn't let me cancel or have refund, manager was rude! Food was packed in a flimsy paper bag... heavy food was put on top so it squashed the bottom food & leaked sauce all over the place. It made the bag rip & food fell upside down on ground - ruined!

Good food, bad place
DESCRIPTION: I completely agree with Bob that this place is in decline. The food is actually the best North Indian food in Delaware but the place is in shambles. If only they'd spend some time and money to renovate the place!

Delicious food makes it worthwhile!
DESCRIPTION: Star of India is my favorite restaurant in Newark. The food is delicious, especially anything tikka masala! I have enjoyed the food at least once a month for several years now. The restaurant is quiet and usually uncrowded. The service is admittedly not so great - you will wait a long time, and you may have to get up and look for the waitress to get a refill on water - but the food makes it worthwhile.

Terrible Service
DESCRIPTION: In the time it took for us to get our food, 2 different couples were seated, ordered, FINISHED, and left. This is probably due to the fact that the first couple next to us got our food... It was exactly everything we had ordered. They looked somewhat confused but with Indian food it's sort of hard to tell so they just ate it. So no explanation from the waitress, we sat there for maybe 45 minutes before I motioned to her. She said "Oh, do you need something?" I said "Yeah, where is our food?" She acted surprised, as if why shouldn't we already be eating. Another 10 minutes go by and our food finally comes up. The worst part is I discovered a 2nd credit card charge from them for another amount, so they basically charged me double plus extra. I'm in the process of fighting this charge right now.

Food is fabulous
DESCRIPTION: My third trip to this restaurant was last night, and we're always impressed with the food. It's terrific, the portions are huge (we love our leftovers!), and it's very reasonably priced. However, the service can be improved exponentially! If it wasn't on the menu, our waitress had no idea what we were talking about. Asking to move to another table due to a vibrating noise behind us was difficult and service was incredibly SLOW! We were in the restaurant almost 2 hours and only ordered entrees! My boyfriend tried to order a scotch three times, and all three times the waitress told us they didn't have any, even after my boyfriend offered to point out their full bottle that was behind the bar. What's the point of having a liquor license if you won't sell any liquor? A list of available liquors/drinks might be helpful for the waitstaff so customers can just point to what they want, eliminating any misunderstandings OR the restaurant could go back to being a BYOB type of place! :) As far as atmosphere, some areas of the restaurant are better than others. I think they have as much room for couches and waiting areas as they do seating for dinner! Overall, the food by itself is worth going back for - if you have the time.
