"Ras Asfour (Lentil Soup)" from Malaysia Kopitiam, Washington, DC
1 1/2 c Yellow or orange lentils (go through them and pick out stones) 1/2 lb Choice ground beef 1/3 c Chopped fresh parsley 1 t Salt 1/4 t Pepper 2 t Olive oil 1 Onion, sliced 1/2 c Shaarla, or vermicelli broken into pieces 1/3 c Lemon juice Suhour ("the meal before sunrise") is usually good, stick to your ribs food. Rinse lentils and drain, picking out any discolored ones. Combine with 5 6 cups water in a large kettle and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes, skimming off foam as it forms on top. While the lentils are cooking, combine ground meat with parsley, salt and pepper. Using about a tablespoon of the meal mixture for each, form into small meatballs and chill until needed. Heat the olive oil and saute the onion until soft and golden. Reserve. When lentils are soft, mash them with the back of a spoon to thicken the soup. Add shaarla (or vermicelli) and meatballs. Cook 10 15 minutes longer, until meatballs are cooked through. To serve, divide onion slices among 6 bowls. Stir lemon juice into soup and ladle over onions. Makes 6 8 servings.

Disappointing.
DESCRIPTION: It was a slow day when we stopped by Kopitiam for a late lunch. Only 1 table was occupied. After reading so many good reviews from the web and the Washingtonian, we were very excited to try it out. However, by the end of our meal, we felt cheated. We tried the deluxe sampler as a starter and were given 4 chicken skewers, 1 po piah, 2 curry puffs, 2 otak-otak, 1 lo bak, and some crispy and spicy vermicelli. The chicken skewers had a light bland (satay) sauce over it. The satay sauce lacked spice and chunky peanuts. The otak-otak; which should have a smooth fish paste with egg texture and herbs mixed into it, felt like being left on the kitchen counter for hours, and was crumbling dry. The po piah and curry puffs were average but the lo bak tasted sour. . And the vermicelli was neither crispy nor spicy at all. We also ordered some char kuih teow (stir fry flat noodle) and Hainanese Chicken Rice. The noodles were too oily and lifeless; whereas the fragrant aroma from the chicken rice was absent. The steamed chicken was dry and tasteless as well, and the garlic chili sauce that accompanied the Hainanese Chicken Rice tasted like the Thai Sweet and Spicy sauce from the bottle. For dessert, we had ABC ais kachang. Although the ice was not shaved properly (chunks in the bowl), at least it had some palm sugar in it. Overall, as "Penangnites" (natives of the Penang Island), we dare say that these dishes here were an embarrassment to us. They do not represent the authenticity and liveliness of real Malaysian food.

Good Food - Interesting Service
DESCRIPTION: The food was great, the restaurant was clean and presentation was good. However, though the wait staff were not rude, I could not help but feel that they were trying to push me and my companion out, and it was a slow Tuesday night!! So, if you want good food but don't care about feeling rushed, then this is the place. Regardless, I'm still going back for more.
