"Asparagus Ham Rolls" from Smilie's, Harahan, LA
2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/4 cup all purpose flour 2 cups milk 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon white pepper 24 fresh or frozen asparagus stalks 8 thin slices fully cooked ham about 1/2 pound) 1/4 cup bread crumbs In a saucepan, melt butter; stir in flour and cook until thick. Gradually stir in milk and cook until bubbly and thickened. Stir in cheese, salt and pepper. Remove from heat. Place three asparagus stalks on each ham slice. Roll up; secure with toothpicks if necessary. Place in 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan; cove r with cheese sauce. Sprinkle with crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 20 min utes. The best meal I had last time in New Orleans
DESCRIPTION: Flavorful heaps of warm stews over rice, attentive staff, good bread pudding = pleasant meal. Only disappointment was a lackluster honeydew daiquiri, although my friend liked it and finished it off for me. Her hurricane was delish. Will visit again.

Hard to beat combination
DESCRIPTION: You can get good food in a casual atmosphere - all in the company of gentlefolk here. A hard combination to come by in N'Awlins. Menu specialties include the freshest seafood seasoned to perfection. Mama's own kitchen quality here, supervised by a VERY picky owner. Had terrific stuffed soft shell crab (fried in batter). Companion enjoyed a snapper filet. The quiet, casual atmosphere is a real plus in NO. Easy to find location too. Have eaten there many times but didn't know about this review page. The comment below is from a "pick one" list. I would never say "...eaten at"!! The ambiance is simple, clean and the food is tops. I don't want to pay for ambiance, just food.

Red Beans and Rice, with either fried chicken or turkey necks and a few slices of homemade cornbread, is the specialty of the house. Although the name Dunbar's isn't as well known as "Emeril" or "Mother's", Mrs. Dunbar's recipe for beans is found in many New Orleans cookbooks.\n\nA sticky okra gumbo and smothered okra are also renowned Dunbar's dishes.
