Shabby Treatment--Mediocre Establishment
DESCRIPTION: Reserved table for 2 for Easter Sunday dinner at 3pm. Arrived on time & were shown a cramped table in the smaller side room near waiter's station even though only about 65% of tables were occupied at that hour. Asked for a less confined table and the hostess directed us to a more desirable one two tables away and so we sat down. The owner comes rushing over and asks us to move to another (less desirable) table, with no explanation, in the main room. So we get up, gather our belongings and go off to sit at the 3rd table. This was NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE and a rude way to greet patrons particularly on a holiday. We did not complain, but we should have. The waiter fawned all over the regular patrons and it was difficult to get good service. We tried to make the most of it after this mistreatment, but the food was not particularly good, bland for Turkish food, and the ambiance and decor were very unattractive and cold. The waiter was average when you could get his attention. The merlot wine by the glass was mediocre. By the way, while we were there, only two more groups showed up, so the table shuffling seemed to be some sort of passive-aggressive move on the owner's part. Also, he sat by the front door at a table eating his own dinner at a very messy table and reading the paper even though he had a hostess who could greet patrons--never have I seen such behaviour on the part of an owner before--he should have been at the back out of sight eating and reading or up front attending to his guests, one or the other. Poor value
DESCRIPTION: This is not what you get in Turkey. Why not have olive oil and balsamic rather than butter with pita bread. If you serve salads on a warm night dont leave it in the heat before serving - at least spray some water over it. Calamari dried out. Lamb shanks from wethers not lambs (now that will test most of you). Service without a smile. What a pity - this area needs some authenic foreign food desperately. A lost opportunity

Our Favorite Restaurant
DESCRIPTION: We have been going to Kazan Restaurant for many years - the service is consistently excellent and we can always count on the food being delicious. I don't even cook lamb at home anymore since we can get such wonderful lamb chops and shanks at Kazan's. The host is gracious and always very welcoming towards us. We're picky and this is our favorite restaurant.

DESCRIPTION: I would not recommend this restaurant. The food is very ordinary and the price does not match the quality of food. The rice is very ordinary and the meat is not very flavoured. We paid a huge bill for not many people and could have got better food in another Kabob place.

Great Food, Great Service
DESCRIPTION: This is our favorite "splurge" restaurant. Even though we only go at most once a year, the owner, hostess and waiters always treat us like long-lost relatives. The service is outstanding--polite, efficient waiters quietly attend to your every need. Order the doner kebab--it's almost a religious experience. The appetizers are also worth a try. My only complaint is the decor--this restaurant used to be dark and exotic looking but a remodel a few years back made it more bland, American and modern. DESCRIPTION: We've been going to Kazan for the past 25 years and every trip gets better. The food make this place the best and the service is an added bonus. The staff makes us feel at home and treats us like family. As more restaurants offer only frozen foods this place only gives the finest freshest meats and seafood. Consistently great
DESCRIPTION: My husband and I have been going here for years. The owner (or whomever is at the front greeting people) are always very nice and gracious. The food is great tasting (especially the salad dressing on the salad that comes with the meals), and the other patrons always seem to be enjoing themselves. Very pleasant experience
DESCRIPTION: I ate here on a weeknight this past summer. The place was quiet (almost too quiet), the decor was enjoyable, and the food was tasty and well prepared. My entree was a lamb dish prepared with eggplant and yogurt -- the meat was tender and the different components blended nicely. We had good service, but the man who served us was not very communicative -- he just appeared to take our orders and deliver our food.

BEST FOOD EVER
DESCRIPTION: If you're interested in trying something different, Ephesus is the best place to experiment. Personally, I go there whenever I'm having a bad day to feel instantly relaxed and calmed. If I'm having a bad day, I leave floating on Cloud 9. The best place I've ever taken a date for a quiet evening, as you can park in the Century Theater complex and walk all of 200 feet over to Ephesus. Reservations are recommended for parties over 3 if you're coming after 7, but if it's a date then you should be fine. The style of food ranges from overall Mediterranean to Turkish and the drinks/wine menu is absolutely amazing. I am good friends with most of the staff and, after only 2 visits, they recognized me on site and remembered my favorite dishes. It is one of the only places in the United States where you can get Efes beer, a Turkish Lager, one of the finest beers I have ever had that compliments every meal perfectly. Finish off a wonderful meal with some Turkish Coffee and you've got a recipe for happiness. Can be pricey, but how much would you pay for peace of mind?

DESCRIPTION: Totally lucked into finding this restaurant, not that it hard to find. Landed there one night with two friends, and all three of us went out wowed, and we can be pretty snooty when it comes to food. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable, the food is consistently very good, and the drinks are fresh and generous. Rude Service
DESCRIPTION: Waiters in the bar area who "served" us (and I use that term loosely) were rude and didn't want to spend time explaining the menu to us or even serving us. He would literally "throw" the food/drinks on the table and before we could even ask for anything else, he was gone. Threw the food down as he was walking by. Quite a skill but not up to par with Zaytinya's reputation. We inquired about a few dishes and were barely given an explanation of size but we were told that "4-5 dishes per person would be his recommendation"!!! Oh, I'm sure at $6-8 a pop!!! Come on!!! Servings are VERY small. Tapas are good but, again, for the price, too small.

Delicious and the best restaurant in DC!
DESCRIPTION: I've probably gone to have dinner at Zatinya well over 20 times over the last year. It's convenient to the MCI Center before and after games. The wait staff has been awesome at explaining the dishes and the wine. They know their food very well. They are friendly, and make great suggestions if you're not sure what to eat. The food is delicious, It's not heavy or greasy at all, it's very tastey, all of the deserts are to die for. I have had to sample them all. They all have different tastes so it would depend on your mood. If you're a vegitarian this is a great place to eat. I haven't tried too many of the meats but the chicken is very good, and there are some lamb dishes that are very good. There is an eggplant puree dish that is one of the best things you could possibly eat on a cold winter night. The tatziki is good and the waiters are quick to point out what is not in season or as good as it normally is. The ambiance can be a little pretentious but the wait staff is all down to earth. I'm not sure about the bar, I've only been in there a few times and the food was great as usual and the drinks were good, your usual bar service. Try the turkish chocolate coffee cake and ask them to heat up the cake! It has a warm gananche inside that just melts! The pistachio yogurt icecream is also very good! The restrooms are nice too.

Terrific Experience
DESCRIPTION: Just had our second visit to this restaurant. Both experiences were excellent. In both cases, the service was outstanding. Food is delightful, though admittedly there are dishes that don't meet expectations, but some far exceed it. With "Mediterranean Dim Sum," in effect, you can try a little bit of a lot and experience all sorts of new things. My wife and I just went there for our wedding anniversary. We shared 8 dishes and enjoyed the experience. Despite the crowds, the waitress was very attentive and friendly.

DESCRIPTION: There's a reason Nizam's won Washingtonian awards every year from 1984-2001. It is darn good. We were greeted at the door by Nizam and a waiter. He seated us in the front of the restaurant. Appetizers were great- we got the sampler for everyone. Main courses were excellent- I had lamb shank, as did my mother-in-law. It tasted like it was the only thing they had worked on all day. But it wasn't... My dad had doner kabob, my wife had yogurtlu kabob, and my father-in-law had efes kabob. those seemed the most remarkable, but everyone agreed it was a very good meal. Dessert was excellent as well. Absolutely incredible dining experience!
DESCRIPTION: We have been frequenting this establishment for more than two years now and we are at a literal loss for words when trying to describe not only the eclectic and unique cuisine, but also the homey and friendly atmosphere. The staff is superb, the menu is superior and the overall experience is enchanting. This restaurant glorifies the existent Philadelphia restaurant scene and certainly stands out as an ethnic landmark in Chestnut Hill. As many of our friends and acquaintances would agree, Al Dana is one of the most unique dining experiences that has ever graced the streets of Philadelphia.

A wonderful vegetarian experience...and I'm not even vegetarian.
DESCRIPTION: I don't usually opt for vegetarian, but last night I tried their spinach dish and was utterly impressed. It was a little tart, a little salty (from the feta)...just the right amount of flavor to go with the rice. My friend had the eggplant, and that was good, too. For dessert, we had the delicious rice pudding. It was also a delightful surprise to find out that they had a bellydancer on the weekends. This was my first Middle Eastern restaurant in this area, and I am completely satisfied.

Turkish Delight on Broadwalk
DESCRIPTION: In 12 years, owner Ferhat Hasan Kochan has built a steady clientele who pack the casual, friendly open-air caf . The view is great for people-watching or a seaside panorama. Inside, satellite TV carries Turkish channels; in the background, there's Turkish music. The simple setting belies the hard work going on in the kitchen. This is the place to go for baba ghanoush ; homemade yogurt with cucumber and dill; or doner kebab, similar to a gyro. Their Turkish salad is a generous serving of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onion, black olives, parsley, dill, olive oil and vinegar and if you like creamy feta. Lahmacun , Turkish pizza is topped with ground lamb and chopped vegetables seasoned with crushed peppers, sumac and oregano on a paper-thin crust. Don't miss the Sigara boregi , fried, cigarillo-shaped phyllo rolls, hiding a treasure of fresh parsley and feta, or borek - baked golden pastries, filled with chicken, spinach or lamb. Specialties include saut ed fresh sardines (allow 25 minutes); diced, fried veal liver; and tender lamb chops. They serve 15 entrees, primarily lamb and chicken kebabs, plus red snapper, whole brook trout and salmon steak all served with rice and grilled vegetables. Kochan makes his own baklava (and variations), rice pudding and heavenly Turkish pudding or kazandibi like a cross between flan and cr me brulee but lighter. Top off with potent Turkish coffee for a true taste of tradition.

A fine addition to Bethesda
DESCRIPTION: Levante's is a nice addition to the international dining scene in Bethesda. One of the few middle-eastern places and the only one with the Turkish pides. The food is almost always outstanding but the service is sometimes lacking and the wait on weekend evenings can be long if you don't have a reservation. Despite the delicious food and nice atmosphere I can't help but feel that the price is a bit too high. But certainly not so high as to prevent me from returning.
