"Deep-Fried Tofu" from Eden Vegetarian Cafe, Bar Harbor, ME
FORMATTED BY S.GRABOWSKI 1 lb Tofu, cut in 1/2 inch cubes 1/2 c Wheat germ 3 tb Cornstarch Vegetable oil for deep fry Soy sauce >OR< Sweet and sour sauce 1) Roll the tofu cubes in the wheat germ mixed with cornstarch. Heat the oil to 350F on a deep fat frying thermometer. 2) Fry the cubes, a few at a time, in a basket in the hot oil. Drain on paper towels and keep warm while making the remainder. 3) Serve with soy sauce or sweet and sour sauce dip. From The New York Times New Natural Foods Cookbook

Located on West St, Eden is centrally located in Bar Harbor, and offers ocean-view tables, as well as a full service bar, and a large selection of organic wines and beers, as well as a children's menu, and an extensive loose tea menu.

an excellent place for vegetarian fare
DESCRIPTION: I recently had both dinner and lunch at this new vegetarian cafe and was incredibly impressed with the food. The meals were easily among the top two or three vegetarian meals I've had in the last 30 years. While the ingredients were excellent, what really made the dishes stand out was the creativity and care the chef showed in combining textures and flavors. A simple frita, for example, hadd a romano cheese crust whose tanginess melded perfectly with the melted herbed potato and carrots topping.

Gourmet Vegan
DESCRIPTION: Excellent entree's. The appetizer was crisp lavosh strips served w/a light avacado cream spread. I had the Tofu Marsala in light sauce w/capers. My husband had the Tem-ph w/white turnips. Dessert was the chocolate cake w/vanilla cream. Highly recommended cafe.
